Why does My Bathroom Smell like Sewage? Identify the Reasons

Despite your diligent efforts to maintain a clean and fresh bathroom, you may still encounter a sewage-like odor coming from the sink, shower drain, or toilet.  The first step to eliminating this foul odor is identifying the underlying causes.

Common causes behind sewage smells

  • Dry P-trap: Almost all the bathroom sinks and toilets have a piping component called the P-Trap. Each time we use the bathroom, a small amount of water remains in the P-trap. It works as a protective layer between the sewage smell and your bathroom. During warm periods or when the bathroom is unused, the P-trap may dry out, allowing unpleasant sewer odors to permeate the bathroom.
  • Blocked or damaged sewer pipe: The sewer pipe transports the waste and drained water to the main sewer line from the plumbing system. If the main sewer pipe gets damaged or broken, it can block the drainage flow or leak water into your plumbing system, causing a foul sewer smell.
  • Clogged Shower Drains: Even with regular cleaning, hair, dirt, dead skin, and soap residue accumulate and pass through the shower drain. Over time, all this stuff can lead to drain clog, grow bacteria, and spread that foul smell into your bathroom.
  • Damaged toilet: The toilet bowl can be the reason behind the foul sewer smell. Over time, wear and tear can loosen the wax ring seal or caulking at the base of the toilet. Sewer gas can make its way to the bathroom through this loose seal. Sometimes there are cracks in the toilet sink too that can lead to moisture buildup, invite bacteria, and cause foul odors.
  • Bacteria build-up: The drains and the toilet can be the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Over time, a bacterial layer can form inside the pipes and the toilet bowl. With time, this layer grows, reacts with other wastes and soap, and causes that sewer-like smell. It’s more common in summer as bacteria multiply due to the heat.
